What is online fundraising?
Online fundraising can come in many forms, but generally refers to using the Internet to raise money. Online fundraising sites harness tools like email and social media to help you get noticed by a significantly larger audience. There are lots of sites out there, each with a different focus: Kickstarter is for creative projects, Patreon looks to help artists, and GoFundMe targets the individual cause. And of course, there’s EdCo. EdCo specializes in fundraising for K-12 schools and school programs. Everything is designed with schools, teams, teachers and students in mind.
The power of the internet…
Overall, 3B people are now using the internet—that is 51% of the human population. 81% of the US population has a social media profile. It makes sense when we see that GoFundMe has helped millions raise $5B for their causes and more than 10,000 people start campaigns every day. Kickstarter has had nearly 15,000,000 backers and funding on 146,000 projects. EdCo has seen teams raise thousands in 48 hours with minimal effort. It’s a fact; online has the potential to reach more people than any other form of fundraising.
Online Fundraising & Schools
Many school groups have hopped on the online fundraising bandwagon – and wisely so. Instead of, or, in addition to selling products, fundraising online works by “selling” supporters on your students’ passion, excitement, and hard work. Here’s a fun fact: while Americans eat $20B of chocolate a year, they give over $50B in charity to support education! Believe it or not, people love supporting education more than they love eating chocolate! 🙂
Online fundraising helps school groups connect with alumni, far-away family, and community members (like local businesses) looking for ways to give back.
Using the EdCo platform, you can set up a successful online fundraiser keeping these six steps in mind…
- Set up a fundraising goal
- Tell your story
- Build a strong supporter network
- Develop a strong ask
- Send a thank you to donors
- Keep in touch
